I have to say I had a great time at 100 mins War this year, it was the best site yet for the event, aka not at a school.  I hate events that are at schools, just feels weird.   It was a great day over all.

The ride was great, i headed up with my great buddy of mine and she is fun to travel with.  The fighting was great, I was running a bit late / I wasn’t really sure when the speed tourney was starting.  So, i missed that by a few mins but that was ok since I am so horribly out of shape.  Than I made it to the rest of the event fine.

The new shield is working out great and so is the new leg armour! I am pumped, after using the small shield at a fight practice and at a war I feel really good about the whole thing.  Things are turning up milhouse, and once the new year starts I am going to get back into pushing hard to get back to twice a week fighting.

I did get a pic of my kit as it is now, so I posted it here.  I need work on my foot wear and a new helm.  I am working with Master Cet to work out a sugar loaf.

I have been trying to get the padded gambeson leg armour to work for a year now.  It is starting to get old, they were “are” stiff and fit very weird and are hard as hell to fight in.  I know my boy Joe has been working on his too and with some luck.

Yesterday night I jumped back in to working on mine to see if I can get them working, because I have had two failures in the area this year in my amour, first were these and second was this piece of armour (see right) they look cool and I thought they would work well too but i was very wrong.  At pennsic I was wearing them and they blow up twice. Both times resulted in some pain (not much but some) and than I needed to  tape them up (which I hate to death).  In the end they didnt end up working very well

In that I stated my second round of working with the padded gamdeson leg armour, and I started to modify the shape and cut of the body.  Also, I have re-enlisted the plastic floating knees I was using before. 

As you can see to the left I have cut the inter leg section of the piece and added a cut behind the knee as well.  I think I might add a strap or two to make it easier to wear and a tighter fit, which will allow me to feel the hits a bit more than if I just let it hang.    Also, I might add a piece of leather to the back just to make it a more complete fit.

For the knee I simply readjusted it to make it fit a bit better but here is a pic of that too.

In the end I am going to wear the black greaves, plastic knees and legs; I will see how that works out and let you all know.

I have finished my work on my wood shield and I am hoping it works out.  I haven’t had a chance to use it yet because of my work schudel.  But I am hoping next week will be a good week to try it out.

I have started on a wood kite shield for fun, I have been fighting with a larger kite for about a year and a half now and I am just looking to have some additional fun while still improving my defensive game.   So, I have made a 18 inch by 32 inch round kite.  It should be a fun little guy that I can just bet around with and enjoy, with the added fun of being “more” period.

Since it is so small I decided to keep it flat, the round would be close to a 1/2 inch deep and I felt it would be better flat.

Than I edged the shield with Aluminum square channel, not bad and it was pretty easy.  To make the cuts I used a set of metal snips that I have for fixing amour.

Once I had edge the shield which took about an hour or so I started Glueing down the edging.  Now I am not sure if this will help since I used liquid nails but I thought it would help a little bit.  I am also relaying on the front and back fabric (canvas) covering to help hold it in place.  If this dosent work; O well I will start over and try again.

After waiting for the glue to dry I started on the back covering, I chose a material I had laying around and thought it might look nice on my new shield.   So I used a Spray adhesive to set th fabric.  I have done this before and it worked out great for me.

As you can see below it looks ok, not great but ok and I am hoping to has it looking better after a bit of time working with the canvas cover next.  Which I will use a mixture of wood glue to help hold it down and give it a bit more stiffness.

Any updates on the D3O you posted on earlier? Has it held up? Have you abandoned it in favor of your period kit? I just found the stuff and am interested, but if it didn’t pass the field test, I’ll steer clear.

My feeling for this material are still good, I have been using it in my helm and on my elbows for a good bit.  They have made it though a Pennsic, a bunch of fighter practices and a crown tourney.

The quality is good, the padding its self is great.  The housing has held up ok but now it has a few holes in it and is losing the over all fit.  But it still fits fine.

Since I am moving towards a more period kit, the high level of protection with the minimal amount of padding.  The D3O has really come though and is doing just want I wanted it to do.

Well its been about 3 months since I posted; that should say something about my mind set.

SCA Culture:

I havent been focused on the SCA much recently, life has gotten busy and I need to step back a bit.  At this point I am re-evaluating my time and needs.  This is in the SCA and in my real life.  I feel once I get my real life sorted I can give more back to the SCA again.

On a sword fighting note:

I have been training and fighting, I have graded to wearing a full maille hauberk when I am fighting;  It is one of Ice Falcons Armoury pieces.  It is very nice and heavy.  It has added to my fun, and my feel of a slightly more period action.

Also, I am going to add a smaller wood shield in to my fighting set up.  So one week with small one week with bigger.  This has been brought on my Sir Valgard and Sir Richard both guys are inspirational to me and were I am going at this point.
